Happy 70th Birthday, Babu! Hope You Like Mice!

Monday 12.24.12 travelogue – AP

Me again!  It was Babu’s birthday today so we gave him the cards we made for him on the airplane and gave him lots of hugs and kisses.  Today was spent getting in and out of the car all day to see waterfalls, beaches, and canyons. I thoughtfully advised my mother that I needed to use the facilities before we made the steep climb up 3400 ft to the Waimea Canyon Lookout. Too bad the Visitor’s Center was closed for Christmas Eve.  Good thing there were some tall shrubbery nearby.  Once we reached the top, we had a quick cold pineapple break before going to the lookout. Everyone was so excited by the view below:

The only thing that would have made this more sublime was if we had had some crackers to share with this majestic animal. Too soon, we had to say ‘good-bye’ to the mouse and head back down the mountain before the rain came in.

We found shelter from the rain under some canopies at Island Taco. We stayed cozily in the car while my mom ran out to get us some delicious ice cream before heading back to the hotel where the kind staff had dropped off some Christmas cookies as thank you for the tips we had been leaving each day (hat tip for tip on tips to KG).

[Ed. note: KMART RULES!  Not only did it have a decent produce section, but the souvenir section was ample and cheap! This is where you want to go to stock up on Anahola Granola, leis, and coffee.]

We celebrated Babu’s 70th Birthday at Duke’s where all ten of us were seated in our usual corner table. Santa came by with gifts for all of the kids and BSG scored a toy but ZP and I only got chocolate from his elf because when he came to our table, our food had arrived and he turned away. Ah well. The Hula Pie was enough to make us forget about the easily distracted Santa. It was tasty! I bet the mouse would have approved.
