Yep, we have started poking around on Redfin and looking at houses. We saw one house last weekend that was particularly sweet; so much so that it makes me nervous because we just started and haven’t looked at any other houses and do we really want to enter a life-long commitment based on one date? Let’s take a look at my dream house must-haves, shall we? That’s the 21st century dream house, not to be confused with the one I drew in my third-grade class in which the house was surrounded by a gravity-defying slide that terminated in a smaller version bouncy house.

Nearly a year ago, I compiled the “Barbaji Dream House” list. The house we looked at this weekend has all of the “has to haves” and most of the “dream”. The house is so pretty, the master bedroom is lush, it’s about half a mile to the metro. On top of that, it’s got stuff I wasn’t even expecting: a jacuzzi (pass), heated towel racks (how did I miss putting that on my list?), a sauna (what!), a loft above the garage (emergency guestroom or kids’ hideway?). The price is not so dreamy but we might be able to work something out.
As I mentioned before, I adore AdMo but extenuating circumstances are leading us in this direction and fast. I’ll perversely miss the hoodlums and hipsters here. The plethora of ethnic restaurants and grocery stores. The ability to walk to downtown DC, Georgetown, Mt. Pleasant, and Columbia Heights without breaking (too much of) a sweat. And if Maryland, the disgruntled “taxation without representation” attitude we get to adopt when someone asks us what state we live in. I will not, however, miss the massive construction on 18th Street. The shit we have to side-step on the sidewalks (figurative and literal). The up-and-coming bullies at school. So, if you want to get your walkable-heart-of-DC visits in, now’s the time to do it!
